ROLL BACK
A fun, gameful way to organize your photos

The Problem
Our photo libraries are growing faster than we can keep up with, but the experience of reviewing them hasn't really changed. Thousands of old photos sit buried behind endless scrolling, making it easy to forget about them altogether.
The problem wasn't finding a photo—it was giving people a reason to keep exploring.
Traditional photo apps make browsing efficient, but often passive. I saw an opportunity to turn reviewing old photos into something more engaging, playful, and worth coming back to.
What If Your Photo Library Was a Game?
Photo libraries are full of moments we rarely revisit. I wanted to turn that passive scrolling experience into something people actually want to play with.
Inspired by the tactile challenge of solving a Rubik’s Cube, I designed a new way to explore old photos through playful, unexpected interactions. The goal wasn't just to organize photos, but to make revisiting them feel like discovering something new.
A photo library becomes more than an archive—it becomes an experience.
Discovery
We started by looking at how people actually interact with their photo libraries. With thousands of photos accumulating on their phones, most people rarely take the time to organize them. Photo management often becomes a task they postpone, while browsing usually means endlessly scrolling through a chronological feed.
This revealed three key opportunities:
01 — Too many photos, too little organization
People accumulate large numbers of photos but don't want to spend time manually sorting and categorizing them.
02 — Browsing is passive
Traditional photo galleries are designed for efficiency, but scrolling through old photos can quickly become repetitive and unengaging.
03 — Sharing lacks a new experience
Sharing usually means selecting a single photo and posting it. There is an opportunity to turn a collection of photos into something more interactive and worth sharing.
These insights led to a central design question:
How might we make organizing, revisiting, and sharing old photos feel less like a task—and more like an experience?

Goal
Reimagine the photo library as an experience, not just a place to store photos.
The goal is to make managing, exploring, and sharing old photos feel effortless and enjoyable by combining automatic organization with a playful new way to interact with photo collections.

Goal 01 — Make photo organization effortless
Automatically organize large photo collections into clear, simple groups, reducing the effort and frustration of manually sorting albums.
Goal 02 — Make browsing more engaging
Turn reviewing old photos from passive scrolling into a playful, interactive experience that sparks curiosity and encourages exploration.
Goal 03 — Make photos more shareable
Transform ordinary photos into unique Memory Cube experiences that give people something fun and unexpected to share, react to, and talk about with friends.
From Camera Roll to Memory Cube
We turned photo management into a game with Memory Cube—a playful way to organize, explore, and share old photos.
01 — Snap it together
Photos are automatically grouped into themed Memory Cubes, so users don't have to spend time sorting through their camera roll.
02 — Play & explore
Instead of endlessly scrolling, users twist, turn, and explore each cube to uncover different photos. Reviewing an old album becomes a small moment of discovery.
03 — Share the surprise
When users find a collection they love, they can turn the cube into a short video and share it with friends—giving ordinary photos a fun new format and a natural conversation starter.
From organizing photos to playing with them, Memory Cube makes the photo library feel less like storage and more like a playground.

Visual Style Exploration
Making the photo library feel like a game.
We explored a visual language inspired by puzzles, playful objects, and tactile game pieces. The cube became the core visual element, giving the experience a sense of movement, discovery, and interaction.
The visual direction combines bold shapes, modular layouts, playful motion, and subtle 3D depth to make each photo feel like a piece of a larger puzzle. Rather than presenting photos as flat thumbnails in a traditional gallery, the interface encourages users to interact, explore, and uncover what comes next.
The goal: make every interaction feel like “What’s behind the next piece?”
Solutions
To bring this playful photo experience to life, we came up with three core features—each designed to make organizing, exploring, and sharing photos feel more like a game.
01 — Auto-Organize
Turn a messy camera roll into simple, automatically grouped Memory Cubes.
02 — Play & Explore
Interact with each cube like a puzzle, making browsing old photos more fun and engaging.
03 — Create & Share
Turn a Memory Cube into a short, playful video that users can share with friends.

Feature 1
Making Photo Browsing Feel Like a Game
Inspired by the process of solving a Rubik’s Cube, this app transforms reviewing old photos from passive scrolling into an interactive game. Instead of simply looking through an album, users actively explore and interact with their photo collection in a new way.
The unexpected interaction creates a sense of curiosity, discovery, and excitement, making users want to keep exploring. It also encourages people to capture, revisit, and share more moments—turning a photo library from a static archive into an experience.

Feature 2
Turning Ordinary Photos Into Something Worth Sharing
A Memory Cube transforms a collection of ordinary photos into a unique visual story. Instead of sharing a single photo on social media, users can create and share a Memory Cube video that feels more personal, playful, and unexpected.
The format gives friends something new to react to and talk about, turning photo sharing into a conversation starter and creating more opportunities for connection.

Feature 3
Making Photo Organization Effortless
Organizing photo albums can feel like a chore, especially when thousands of photos are constantly accumulating. Instead of asking users to manually sort and categorize everything, Memory Cubes automatically organizes photos into clear, simple collections.
At the same time, the cube-based browsing experience makes exploring old photos feel less like managing a library and more like discovering something new.

Learnings
01 — Play can change how people interact with familiar content
We learned that adding a playful interaction can turn a routine task like browsing photos into something people actively want to explore.
02 — Simple interactions can create a stronger sense of discovery
The cube concept showed us that the interaction itself can be as important as the content. Small moments of movement and surprise made browsing feel more engaging without adding complexity.
03 — A new format can give old content a new life
Photos don't always need to be new to feel interesting. By changing how they are organized, explored, and shared, we can help users see familiar photos in a completely different way.
The biggest takeaway:
Good UX doesn't always mean making things faster—it can also make everyday experiences more enjoyable.
